Taking Care of Mom: Self-care Tips

Mom's have a unique challenge when attempting to meet our health and fitness goals...EVERYONE comes to you for their needs! This can make our goals seem impossible to achieve at times. Believe it or not, making yourself a top priority will ultimately benefit your family.

I can already hear your concerns, but wait...hear me out! You've heard the old adage: if momma's not happy nobody's happy. As a mom of three myself, I can fully relate to that statement. That is why it is so important to make self-care a priority. It may seem impossible at first, but with some careful planning AND some family boundaries, you can make sure your health (mental and physical) and needs are being met. The best part of self-care is knowing your setting an example for your children. Did you know that children of fit moms are 75% less likely to be obese? That's right taking care of you helps them!

Here are a few steps to ensure your health is a top priority.

  • start making small changes at first. This way you'll have better success at keeping those changes. When you try to change too much at once time your more likely to fail.

  • realize that committing to a healthy lifestyle now will allow you to enjoy your grandchildren much later. You'll be in better shape to run, jump and play with them. You'll also be able to keep up!

  • set a time for exercise and make sure your family understands that is your "me time"! When I first started working out again (at home) my children would CONSTANTLY interrupt me. There were a few times I had to get stern with them. Eventually, they realized I needed that time and began to leave me alone.

  • keep track of your progress, the more you can see how far you have come, the more you'll want to continue! Take weekly or bi-weekly progress pictures, take weekly measurements. Notice how your clothes are fitting differently. These things will keep you going strong!

  • see yourself succeeding, visualize your goals or better yet make a vision board so you can see your goals. Your goals should never be "out of sight, out of mind".
